Developed in partnership with BBC ALBA and MG ALBA, it is a web application that allows anyone to submit an audio or video file containing Scottish Gaelic speech and receive an automatic transcript in return. Once produced, the transcript can be edited and then exported as an SRT subtitle file or as plain text. The app also incorporates automatic translation to English, using EDINA’s ELM tool. Note that no data is kept by the service and it does not train on the data submitted to it.
This is a major milestone, and it is hoped it will prove useful to the Gaelic community and potentially to others.
The project funders and partners included the Scottish Government and Bòrd na Gàidhlig for funding the project, and to our partner organisations: the University of Glasgow, DASG, Tobar an Dualchais / Kist o Riches, the National Trust for Scotland, Faclair na Gàidhlig and the School of Scottish Studies Archives.
